First Home!

I spent plenty of time doing various projects at my childhood home with my dad and brother growing up, did lots of work on other peoples homes in various construction trades, and together with my parents and brother we basically gutted and restored a house in Fort Collins which my parents bought and my brother and I lived in while we were attending Colorado State University.

In the Summer of 2006 my wife and I put together enough dough to purchase our first home, and I was ready to start improvements on my own house. We ended up buying the house below which we really liked because it was relatively cheap and in an awesome neighborhood (big expensive houses surround us).

The day we moved in I aggressively ripped down the ugly lattice archway out front visible in the picture above. It looked ridiculous. A neighbor happened to be walking by and said, “I like you guys already.”

Directly below the lattice was an annoying swinging gate which I ended up tearing out and I used the gate pieces to fill in the gap in the picket fence left by the departure of the lattice arch. I’m sure this made the neighbors even happier.

Catching up

I’ve already taken on so many projects that it’s a shame I’m only starting to document them now. I haven’t done a great job of taking pictures during the process of completing the projects either. Fortunately we took lots of pictures when we bought the house, so I can show before and after pictures and explain how I went about completing the projects.

For current and future projects I will take more of a step by step approach to showing what I’m working on, including tips and tricks that I’ve picked up over the years.
